<image:title>Homepage - Ten years of Yarn Bombing!</image:title>
<image:caption>When Yarn Bombing was first published in 2009, the idea that knitted and crocheted objects could be used as a political act of resistance was brand new. Ten years and thousands of public acts of yarnarchy later, the art of knit and crochet graffiti has entered the public zeitgeist, from the “pussyhat” making the cover of Time to OLEK’s crocheted bull on Wall Street symbolizing The Great Recession: a cultural phenomenon that shows no sign of slowing down.</image:caption>

<image:title>Speaking - Speaking & Workshops</image:title>
<image:caption>I enjoy inspiring people to look at craft, art and design in new and radical ways. As an author and maker, I’ve delivered over a hundred lectures and workshops at galleries, conferences, bookstores, classrooms and libraries. I’ve conducted two North American-wide book tours: in 2011, I visited seven cities in a solo tour, and in 2014 I took part in an epic nine-city tour with authors Betsy Greer and Kim Werker in panel discussions at Powell’s Books during Portland Design Week, The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, and The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC. In 2022, I toured across Canada visiting the Toronto International Festival of Authors, Kingston Writer’s Festival, Calgary’s WordFest Imaginarium, and Edmonton’s LitFest. My talks are always accompanied by large, colourful visuals and personal stories. I enjoy interacting informally with audiences and hearing about their experiences too. <image:title>Books - Hoopla</image:title>
<image:caption>Hoopla includes twenty-eight innovative embroidery patterns and profiles of contemporary embroidery artists including Jenny Hart, author of Sublime Stitching; Rosa Martyn of the UK-based Craftivism Collective; Ray Materson, an ex-con who learned to stitch in prison; Sherri Lynn Wood of the Tattooed Baby Doll Project, which collaborated with female tattoo artists across the United States; Penny Nickles and Johnny Murder, the self-proclaimed Bonnie and Clyde of embroidery; and Alexandra Walters, a military wife who replicates military portraits and weapons in her stitching. Canadian contributors include artists living in Vancouver, Victoria, Bowen Island, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Toronto. Full-colour throughout and bursting with history, technique, and sass, Hoopla will teach readers how to stitch a mythical jackalope, a ransom note pillow, and mean and dainty knuckle-tattoo church gloves, and encourage them to create their own innovative embroidery projects. If you like anarchistic DIY craft and the idea of deviating from the rules, Hoopla will inspire you to wield a needle with flair! With a foreword by Betsy Greer..</image:caption>

<image:title>Books - Strange Material - Strange Material: Storytelling Through Textiles</image:title>
<image:caption>This book showcases crafters who take storytelling off the page and into the mediums of batik, stitching, dyeing, fabric painting, knitting, crochet, and weaving, creating objects that bear their messages proudly, from personal memoir and cultural fables to pictorial histories and wearable fictions. Full-colour throughout, the book includes chapters on various aspects of textile storytelling, from “Textiles of Protest, Politics, and Power” to “The Fabric of Remembrance”; it spotlights well-known projects, such as the profoundly moving Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, as well as unique undertakings such as Climbing PoeTree’s S.T.I.T.C.H.E.D, Mark Newport’s Knitted Superheroes, Tracy Widdess’s Knitted Monsters, as well as poetry blankets and stitched travel diaries. Offbeat, poetic, and subversive, Strange Material will inspire readers to re-imagine the possibilities of creating through needle and fabric. Published by Arsenal Pulp Press, 2014.
